Artist Statement

My name is Hyun-woo Park, and I create artworks that depict monsters, robots, mythical and legendary creatures, godly beings that harbors amongst a sci-fi, fantasy setting with a modern and contemporary twist. I am greatly influenced by popular culture and I try to implement many of these cultural depictions into my artwork. I approach my work this way in order to communicate with people who were influenced by pop culture during the eighties and nineties, but at the same time referencing mythologies and legendary tales. I want to tell modern mythological stories by injecting contemporary themes, which in turn allows us to continue having a dialogue with our predecessors, our history and our collective culture.

My preferred mediums are usually drawing tools such as pencils, pens graphite and other dry media. For color my preferred mediums are acrylic and watercolor paints. The artwork that I usually create have stronger elements in terms of line work, and color usually comes after the drawing. Currently I am experimenting with more color in order to achieve a somewhat painterly aesthetic. I am also trying to implement graphic text into my work to give it a flatness in terms of presentation.

I approach my work with an attitude hoping that I can successfully communicate a story without the need of a lengthy explanation. I would like the viewer to be able to make creative guesses and assume their own narratives, allowing for a natural progression into conversation with people. Storytelling is something that I feel is very dear to me, and I believe it is just as valuable to everyone. Being able to share a story allows us to reflect on our past and it gives us a chance to give back and share our experiences.
